Cotton comforters?

I'm working on creating a wedding registry and my fiance and I are having a hard time with choosing bedding. I've heard that polyester gets pills on it over time and that high thread count cotton, doesn't pill as easily. The problem is, I've only been able to find polyester comforters that we both like. The cotton ones are all plain solid colors and we wanted something a little more traditional like a jaquard print in a slate blue and platinum or champagne. Is polyester okay for comforters? They seem awfully expensive to be cheaply made. The sets we like (that include the comforter, shams, and bedskirt) are ranging around $200-300 for a queen size set. Is that pretty average or can we find nice cotton sets in similar patterns for the same price? I've never bought nice bedding before. We've only had hand-me-downs and clearance bed-in-a-bag sets in the past. Any advice?
